Legal Marriage Requirements

Whilst extremely important, the legal requirements for getting married are really quite simple.

To be married in Australia the bride and groom must be at least 18 years of age.  You are required to lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage with your Celebrant at least 1 month and 1 day prior and no more than 18 months in advance of your wedding.

To finalise the legal paperwork you will be required to present your birth certificates.  If born overseas and not an Australian citizen, you must also provide a Passport issued by your country of birth. If either the bride or groom has been previously married, they must also show the relevant Divorce Papers or Death certificate.  It is also a requirement to have two witnesses at the ceremony that must be at least 18 years of age who will sign the Marriage Register.

The information provided is the ‘norm’.  Under special circumstances there are some exceptions for notice of wedding, age and documentary evidence .  If you have questions please feel free to call or email me to discuss.
